What does it mean
to have the "Mind of Christ"?
Paul told the Corinthians...
Now we have received not the spirit of the world,
but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the
things freely given us by God
For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to
instruct him?
But we have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:12,16
But, is it even realistic to believe that the
same mind that was in Christ Jesus can be in us? I mean, we are
only human after all. Sure, we were originally created in the
Imago Dei, the image of God. But, Adam and Eve blew that whole
thing. Now, were all born in sin and shaped in iniquity. How
could we ever expect to have Christ's mind?
Salvation means you are in Christ. But, it also means
Christ is in you. Paul told the Colossians that Christ in us is
the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Of course, Christ is not
physically in you. He is seated at the right hand of the
Father. The Holy Spirit dwells in you but, Christ is FORMED
in you.
Paul told the Romans, For those God foreknew He also
predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son
(Romans 8:29). Being conformed to the image of Christ is not
instant or automatic. It is a total life transformation that
happens from the inside out. As you abide in the Vine - As you
crucify your flesh - As you renew your mind - As you receive the
mind of Christ. Little by little, Christ is being formed IN you.
You are being re-formed once again into the image of God, just
as He always intended. This is a process called Spiritual
Formation.
Our personal Spiritual Formation is a dynamic partnership
between us and God. Its a balance between dependence
and discipline. Dependence, because apart from Christ and
Gods Spirit, we can accomplish nothing. The Potter does
the transforming, not us. Discipline, because we are responsible
for working out our own salvation with fear and
trembling (Phil 2:12). Spiritual growth is not something that is
haphazard. A rich inner life is something that is developed,
cultivated and refined through intentionality and consistency.
We must CHOOSE daily to present ourselves to God to be conformed
to Christs image through the power of the Holy Spirit. We make
this choice by regularly seeking Him through Spiritual
Disciplines.
As modern Christians, many of us cringe at these two words -
Spiritual Disciplines. They sound boring and lifeless. Who
needs disciplines? All I need is the Holy Ghost! But,
what we dont understand is that these are Biblical ways we can
CHOOSE to encounter God, His presence and His power each and
every day. We dont have to wait for an altar call. God has
gifted us with biblical ways to seek His face. Jesus used them.
The Apostles used them. Mother Theresa used them. And,
now, you can too.
These intentional acts of surrender purposefully put us on the
Potters wheel so that He can re-shape and re-form us into the
image of Christ.
Spiritual disciplines serve as an open door where the Spirit can
enter in to renew our minds, circumcise our hearts and exchange
our natural mind for the mind of Christ. God is no respecter of
persons. Over time, ANY PERSON who consistently encounters God
through these timeless spiritual disciplines will experience
spiritual renewal and inner transformation.
